San Diego's Balboa Park
Balboa Park is located in San Diego California. Balboa Park has many museums and they are all conveniently in one location. Besides museums there are other attractions in Balboa Park including the World Famous San Diego Zoo which is considered by many to be the best Zoo in the world. This article will be focusing on only the large number of museums in Balboa Park though.
One of the most popular museums in Balboa Park is the San Diego Air & Space Museum. This is a very popular museums and has lots of airplanes on display such as a Black Bird, Mustang, and Spitfire. Not only does the museum have planes they have some space related things such as an Apollo command module. The museum is educational and kids will inadvertently learn something from coming here. The Air and Space Museum is popular with everyone.
The San Diego Museum of Art’s main focus is on Spanish art like El Greco and Goya. The art museum also has Northern European art. There is also the Living Artist Museum which features more modern art of living artist.
The San Diego Automotive Museum is another popular museum for all ages. It is not as educational as the Air and Space Museum which teaches you about the World Wars but it has a great and constantly changing collection of cars. One of the highlights of the Automotive Museum is an original Tucker car. The cars are rotated every three months to give you different cars to see.
The San Diego Natural History Museum is very popular. The Dinosaur exhibits which kids love are a big reason for the popularity of the museum. They also have a theater that is popular. The Hall of Champions is a sports museum that features all things related to San Diego sports.
The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is very popular and educational. They have a large Dome IMAX originally called the OMNIMAX. Most people still call it the OMNIMAX. The OMNIMAX movies are really amazing and you should try to see one movie here. There are lots of hands on displays and interactive exhibits. This is one of the first science centers to cater to kids and be interactive. The popularity of this museum lead to the spread of other similar science museums. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is sure to foster an interest in science for your kids.
Kids love the Model Railroad Museum. The Model Railroad Museum has giant model railroad models. The level of detail to these models is amazing with some being made as close as possible to the actual track they are made after including little trees where real trees are.
The San Diego Museum of Man is an anthropology museum that is mostly is about the Native Americans. The Museum of Man also features the Central and South American civilizations and these displays are very popular along with the Egyptian displays.
There are many other museums at San Diego’s Balboa Park as well. These museums are not as popular. The other museums include the la Raza which is about Chicano and Native American people. The Mingei International Museum has a focus on Folk Art. The Museum of Photography is one of the more popular of the less frequented museums and is one of only three museums in the country dedicated solely to photographic art. The Timken Museum of Art is small with only 60 works but what works they have are considered excellent. The Veterans Museum and Memorial Center is probably the least visited of all the museums at San Diego's Balboa Park.
With so many museums at San Diego’s Balboa Park you need more then one day to see everything. You can see all the major museums in about a day but you will not have much time at any one museum. You could probably spend an entire week seeing all there is to see at Balboa Park in San Diego.
